In 2001, State Representative Ismail “Kino” Flores (D) sponsored a House Resolution (HCR-38) to establish a monument commemorating the early Spanish and Mexican pioneers of Texas… the Tejano Monument. The measure was sponsored in the Texas Senate by Mario Gallegos (D) and signed by Governor Rick Perry (R) on June 15, 2001.

The mission of the Tejano Monument is to emplace a monument on the Texas Capitol grounds to establish an enduring legacy that acknowledges and pays tribute to the contributions by Tejanos as permanent testimony of the Spanish-Mexican heritage that has influenced and is inherent in present-day Texas culture.
After the unveiling of the Tejano Monument at the State Capitol in Austin, Texas on March 29, 2012 at 10:00 am, Crossroads Events presents an afternoon of free live music at Plaza Saltillo in East Austin from 1:30 pm to 8pm, including food and drink vendors available for purchase.

Events continue:

Friday March 30: 9AM- 3 PM at the State Capital Historical sessions by scholars of Tejano History - Free Event
Friday March 30:  A banquet at the Texas Exes Student Center UT Austin; purchased tickets required                                                                                          

Saturday March 31: 9 AM Tejano Parade on Congress Ave. Free Event
Saturday March 31, 1-4 PM MACC Reenactment of the Tejano Declaration of Independence, book sales, folklorico dancers, etc. -Free Event
