Taco Joint is the place to be; Flavorful Fresh Handmade Tortillas

Just north of the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum and the UT Austin campus, this fueling station kept me going during the SXSW Interactive, Film and Music Festivals from March 9th - 18th. This particular yummy taco for brunch was enjoyed by friend before I went to the Paramount Theater for the screening of 'The Big Easy,' the closing film for the 2012 SXSW Film Festival. It is a scenic documentary of musicians on a train trip over several states, including a stop in Austin, Texas and featuring a local high school band that performed with the featured musicians. It was a packed theater!!

Breakfast tacos are available, but there is also interesting fare available for lunch created by the chef.

It is a big deal to make tortillas everyday. Ask around!!! There used to be a time that was the only way you could get tortillas and NOT at the local supermarkets. Huge difference in the taste and I can attest to that, having been blessed with a great Mom who constantly cooked for my siblings and I. Yummy!!

PITBULL GOES “BACK IN TIME” WITH THEME SONG TO “MEN IN BLACK™ 3”

The theme song to the highly anticipated action adventure comedy Men in Black™ 3, titled “Back In Time,” has been written and recorded by RCA Records/Polo Grounds Music/Mr. 305 recording artist Pitbull, it was announced today by Lia Vollack, President of Worldwide Music for Sony Pictures. The song is now available as a digital single and released to radio on March 26th. Men in Black 3 will be released in 3D in theaters nationwide on May 25, 2012.

In Men in Black 3, Agents J (Will Smith) and K (Tommy Lee Jones) are back... in time.

Barry Sonnenfeld directs the film. The film’s screenplay is written by Etan Cohen, based on the Malibu Comic by Lowell Cunningham. Walter F. Parkes and Laurie MacDonald produce, and Steven Spielberg and G. Mac Brown are the executive producers.

In 2001, State Representative Ismail “Kino” Flores (D) sponsored a House Resolution (HCR-38) to establish a monument commemorating the early Spanish and Mexican pioneers of Texas… the Tejano Monument. The measure was sponsored in the Texas Senate by Mario Gallegos (D) and signed by Governor Rick Perry (R) on June 15, 2001.

The mission of the Tejano Monument is to emplace a monument on the Texas Capitol grounds to establish an enduring legacy that acknowledges and pays tribute to the contributions by Tejanos as permanent testimony of the Spanish-Mexican heritage that has influenced and is inherent in present-day Texas culture.

After the unveiling of the Tejano Monument at the State Capitol in Austin, Texas on March 29, 2012 at 10:00 am, Crossroads Events presents an afternoon of free live music at Plaza Saltillo in East Austin from 1:30 pm to 8pm, including food and drink vendors available for purchase.

Tejano Music Idol Competition Announces its First Audition for the 2012 Contest

TEXAS FOLKLIFE’S BIG SQUEEZE ACCORDION CONTEST; Auditions to be held

Texas Folklife ushers in its sixth annual statewide Big Squeeze accordion contest with auditions in varied towns in Texas.  The non-profit is looking for young squeezeboxers—21 years or younger—in any genre of accordion-based music, including Cajun; German, Czech, and Polish polka; Tejano, Conjunto and Norteño; Western; and Zydeco. The lucky winner of this year’s competition will win $1,000 cash, a new Hohner accordion, recording sessions, and other great prizes.

Auditions are open to the public and are free. Contestants will be judged on song interpretation, technical skill, originality, execution, and stage presence. The auditions will be held March 25, 4-5pm - Latino Cultural Center in Dallas and March 30, 6-7pm - Gallista Gallery in San Antonio. Contestants should arrive one hour early to register or pre-register by phone or email. Contestants may register on site or in advance by calling Texas Folklife at (512) 441-9255 or online at http://texasfolklife.org. Those who cannot attend the audition may mail or e-mail their entries to arrive at Texas Folklife no later than April 2, 2012. The complete contest rules and entry forms are available online.

"The Big Squeeze has proven to be one of our most popular programs at Texas Folklife,” says Cristina Ballí, newly appointed Executive Director. “Audiences love to hear young talent from all over the state and they love to hear their stories. The participants and their families take a wonderful experience with them that they’ll never forget.”

Semifinalists selected by audition or mailed entries will be hosted in Austin to take part in the semifinals held on April 28 at The Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum. At that time, up to four finalists will be selected and awarded $300 each as well as having their hotel stay paid in Houston to compete before a large, enthusiastic audience of accordion fans at the Accordion Kings & Queens Festival on June 2. The Big Squeeze 2012 grand-prize-winner will be selected at the concert by the panel of judges with help from the audience. The grand-prize-winner will receive a prize package valued at $4500, including a $1000 cash prize, a brand new Hohner accordion and recording time at the historic Hacienda Records in Corpus Christi, as well as promotional support from SugarHill Recording Studios, Hohner, Inc., Hacienda Records and Texas Folklife, and other professional opportunities.

The Big Squeeze is supported by the members and Board of Texas Folklife, the City of Dallas Office of Cultural Affairs, the City of Houston through the Miller Theatre Advisory Board, the Houston Endowment, the Still Water Foundation, the Austin Latino Music Association, the City of Austin through the Cultural Arts Division and by a grant from the Texas Commission on the Arts.
